Thiepval Memorial Pipe Band

SSE Arena, Belfast - 4th - 5th September 2015

Thiepval Memorial Pipe Band will make their debut performance in The Belfast Tattoo in September 2015.

Convoy Pipe Band was formed in 1905 as an Ulster Unionist Band.  The band was renamed Thiepval Memorial in 1919 as a tribute to the young local men who died in the 1st World War in 1916 in the Thiepval area of the Somme.  The band first competed in 1938 in Londonderry and in the 1960’s.  The present band has been competing since the mid 1980’s.  We practice twice a week Tues/Thurs nights with extra practices on Saturdays prior to Competitions in Carnone School.

In 2004 the band was placed 2nd in Grade 4B at the World Championships

The band was upgraded to Grade 4A for the 2010 season and spent a year settling in to the Grade and playing more difficult material.  In 2011 the band won the Co Antrim Championships, the North Down Championships and the Ulster Championships as well as being runners up at the Scottish, British, All Ireland and European Championships and securing 4th place at the World Championships in Glasgow.  The band was crowned Grade 4A Champion of Champions in 2009. In October 2011 the band was upgraded to Grade 3B

In 2014 the Band achieve the Following Successes in Grade 3B

·         Champions of Champions

·         Champion of Champions Drum Corp

·         Supreme Champion of Champions UK

·         British Champions

·         Scottish Champions

·         All Ireland Champions

·         World Champions

·         UK Champions

The Band went on an unbeaten season in Northern Ireland, Rep of Ireland & Scotland, which is a very rare occurrence in any Grade. As a result of such an achievement the Band has been upgraded straight to Grade 2 from Grade 3B Skipping Grade 3A.

22 August 2015 in Portrush marked the end of Thiepval Memorials 1st season in Grade 2. The band finished 4th with 2 respectable 3rd placings from 2 judges. Our aim for 2015 was to try and achieve a few 3rd placings from any of the 4 judges on any given day and we have achieved this from our first day out in Bangor to finishing the season with 2 3rds on a few occasions. These achievements show the hard work and dedication of the members. The band is currently under the direction of Pipe Major Alyson McKnight and Drum Sergeant Clarke Kiko Campbell.

The band provides a social aspect of meeting other members, competitors & bands as well as being in the Competition field. The band takes part in local festivals within the community, cross border events, St Patricks’ Day Parades & Fund Raising Events for Charities. The band has been to Romania in 2014 to take part in the Bucharest St Patricks’ Day Parade & then to Russia for the Military Tattoo in September 2014.

In our 110 years in existence, and through many changing and challenging times, we are glad to be still here, playing at Showcase events as well as competitions and flying the flag for Donegal at home and abroad and will continue to do so for many more years to come.
