THE 2014 BELFAST TATTOO - 4th - 5th - 6th SEPTEMBER - ODYSSEY ARENA, BELFAST

About The Belfast Tattoo

Belfast will host the second annual Tattoo event at The Odyssey Arena, Belfast on September 2014.

The Belfast Tattoo 2014 will showcase some of the finest musicians and dancers from across Ulster in a two hour show which will allow the artistes and bands to feature their talents on a scale or in an arena, never available to them before.

The Tattoo has its roots unashamedly in the traditions of the UlsterScots people but will reach out, through the forthcoming years, to showcase many talents through music and dance that UlsterScots people have come into contact with as they have travelled around the world and also those traditions and people who have come to Ulster and had an impact on the traditions of the people of Ulster.

The net has been spread far and wide to bring together the bands and artistes taking place in this year’s event and in the various sections of the show the following can be found:
The Massed UlsterScots Pipe Band 1ST BATTALION THE ROYAL IRISH REGIMENT PIPE BAND

AUGHINTOBER PIPE BAND
Originally a flute band the band changed to become a pipe band in 1949. Originally from the village of Castlecaufield in Co Tyrone, the band are in grade two level of the pipe band world and have recently won grade two championships here in Ulster organised by RSPBANI.
BLEARY AND DISTRICT PIPE BAND
Bleary & District Pipe Band was formed in 1956. Bleary is a townland situated to the south west of the County Armagh market town of Lurgan. The term district in the bands title is probably recognition of the fact that the bands founding fathers did not all come from Bleary but other adjacent townlands such as Ballydougan, Ballinagarrick, Clare and Knocknamuckley. A flute band had existed in Bleary but had floundered at some point in the 1950s. A new band was created in 1956 by a group of individuals who felt the community needed such an outlet.
MANOR CUNNINGHAM PIPE BAND
The band was formed in the early 1900's, by a group of enthusiasts who were keen to learn to play the Scottish bagpipes with the idea of starting a pipe band. They invited the Pipe Major from a local band in Carrigans, Billy Radcliff, to help tutor the band. The band got off to a good start and was soon participating in local events. The band had no uniforms for a number of years.
PIPES AND DRUMS 152 (ULSTER) TRANSPORT REGIMENT RLC PIPE BAND
RAVARA
Ravara is one of N.Irelands most respected and top bands, not only today, but over many years. Ravara have a strong family connection covering many generations of the Connelly family, Father, sons and daughter all play/played in Ravara. Formed in1946 and based in Saintfield, Co Down, Ravara are a grade one pipe band under the leadership of Pipe Major Sam Connolly. Ravara are one of the most respected pipe bands in the U.K, having collected seventeen trophies in this grade
Flute Bands are, numerically, the biggest number of bands associated with the modern UlsterScots movement and culture today. The cost and ready availability made them appealing to those wanting to get into the musical traditions of the UlsterScots people. While the Flute, or Fife as some would call the instrument used by most of the bands, is a relatively simple instrument, there are some bands within the community who have gone on to not only expand the breadth of flute used in the performance of their music but build a particular type of wooden flute only available in this part of the world. BALLYHONE FLUTE BAND
Ballylone Flute Band was formed in 1908 as a part flute marching band by the young men of the townland on the outskirts of Ballynahinch. Todays membership is still drawn mainly from Ballynahinch but the band now also has members from as far afield as Belfast, the Kingdom of Mourne and Scotland. There is also a strong family structure throughout the membership with fathers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives all taking part, and an age difference of over 50 years between the oldest and youngest members. The contest arena was first entered in 1947 and the band has over the years successfully progressed through the various grades to become Flute Band 1 Champions in 1997 and the World Senior Flute Band Champions in 2002 and 2007 and 2008
