Violet McBride, twice World Champion Senior Drum Major, was the first woman ever to win the title. She has also won Ulster, All-Ireland, British, European, Cowal and Scottish Championships in drum-majoring . Having represented both Ulster and Ireland for hockey the pinnacle of her career was in 1988 when she represented GB as vice-captain of the ladies hockey team which competed in the Seoul Olympics, being the only player from N. Ireland on the team at that time. Violet attained many awards which included TSB Outstanding player of the year 1988, Bovril UK Hockey Player of the Year 1987, Sonnelle NI Sportsperson of the Year 1988, Northern Bank Service to Sport Award 1988 and runner up in the Sunday Times GB Sportswoman of the Year 1988. In 1989 she was awarded the MBE from Queen Elizabeth II. An all round athlete she was also a talented tennis, squash and badminton player and in fact two of her school athletic records still stand to this day. Now a keen golfer Violet has played for the Irish Senior Ladies and for her club, Belvoir Park. Also a competent piper she plays at various concerts and weddings.
